The festival starting Monday 28th that isn't touristy: San Jerónimo, 5 days
Just 11 kilometers from the Plaza de Armas, the historic district of San Jerónimo celebrates its patron saint every late September: 5 days of processions, 26+ dance troupes, a food fair, and a 16th-century church built on an Inca huaca. In 2016, it was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation. Most tourists don't know it exists; many young locals don't either. This year it starts on Monday, September 28, with the main day on Wednesday 30.

Thousands of visitors will flock to Arequipa this week to join locals on the main day of celebrations for its 473rd Founding Anniversary this Thursday, August 15th and enjoy the music, dance, and food for which the White City is known. The 8 hour Friendship Parade (Corso de la Amistad) will take place on this day, featuring dances, musicians, and floats highlighting Arequipeñan culture.
Starting in 2014, traveler's visiting the city of Lima will be able to tour the Peruvian capital in a brand new way. Beginning in January of next year, South America's first amphibious bus will begin offering tours from Lima's historic city center to San Lorenzo Island off of Callao.
Arequipa's regional government has announced a 10 million sol investment in a new touristic circuit through the city center, which aims to promote occasionally overlooked sights such as the Fundo el Fierro, La Recoleta Convent, and Puente Grau. The project will involve underground cabling, signage, a new visitor's center, and newly pedestrian-only streets.
Officials have allocated 15% of the funds raised by Machu Picchu's entrance fees for a new museum and cultural park to be constructed near Sacsayhuaman Fortress. The museum will house relics found in Machu Picchu, colonial paintings, and other artifacts and is hoped to rival some of the world's best. A contest will be held for its design. "We're going to create a museum that's parallel with the Louvre in Paris or the Armitage in Russia," Cusco's governor enthused.
Budget airlines will be knocking more than 50% off the price of flights from the US to Peru- can they also reduce the inflated domestic flight prices that airlines in Peru currently charge? Industry insiders think domestic flight prices may drop as low as US$30 by 2015! Currently, a 1hr 15min flight from Lima to Cusco can cost foreignors upwards of US$500, so this would be a much-needed respite and a boon to the Peruvian travel industry.
