The New Tourist Structure: 3 Main Circuits and 10 Routes
To guarantee the preservation of this World Heritage site and regulate visitor flow, the Ministry of Culture manages entry to the Inca Llaqta through a structured system. It is essential to clarify that there are not ten independent circuits, but rather 3 main circuits that are subdivided into 10 route variants identified by letters (A, B, C, D).
Daily capacity is regulated depending on the time of year: during peak season (from June 19 to November 2), the limit reaches 5,600 visitors per day, while during the regular season, capacity is adjusted to 4,500 people daily. This distribution requires every traveler to choose in advance which experience they want to enjoy within the sanctuary.
Circuit 1: Panoramic and Iconic Views
Circuit 1 is designed for those seeking the famous postcard photo from the upper section of the citadel. This circuit travels along the upper terraces and does not include access to the lower urban area or the main temples in the residential sector.
- Route 1-A (Machu Picchu Mountain): Allows the ascent to the highest peak and offers a complete panoramic view. Operational year-round.
- Route 1-B (Upper Terrace): A direct and accessible route to the classic viewpoint on the agricultural terraces. Operational year-round.
- Route 1-C (Intipunku Gateway): Available only during peak season. Connects with the historic Sun Gate.
- Route 1-D (Inca Bridge): Available only during peak season. Leads to the strategic wooden path built into the eastern cliff.
Circuit 2: The Classic and Comprehensive Tour
Circuit 2 is the most complete, requested, and sought-after option in the entire sanctuary. It combines the iconic photograph from the upper platform with a direct descent into the urban heart of Machu Picchu, allowing visitors to appreciate master constructions such as the Temple of the Sun, the Main Plaza, and the Sacred Rock.
Due to high demand, tickets for this circuit usually sell out months in advance. If you want to secure this tour along with exploring the main sites of the Sacred Valley, the best-recommended logistics is to arrange a comprehensive package such as our Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu Tour 2 days, guaranteeing your entry tickets with the support of professional guides.
Circuit 3: Royalty, Huayna Picchu, and Ancestral Routes
Circuit 3, or the Royalty Circuit, explores the lower band of the citadel. It does not allow access to the upper platform for the classic photo, but it is the mandatory path for adventure hikes and entries via historic trails.
- Route 3-A (Huayna Picchu Mountain): The most famous hike to the top of the iconic peak. Requires booking far in advance. To manage this circuit with proper acclimatization time, we suggest checking our program Machu Picchu Overnight Tour 2 days.
- Route 3-B (Designed for the Ancestral Network and Inca Trail): All travelers entering on foot via the ancestral network are automatically assigned to this route. If you are looking for epic trekking alternatives to connect with this experience, you can opt for the Salkantay Trek 5 days or the dynamic Inca Jungle 4 days.
- Route 3-C (Great Cavern / Temple of the Moon) and Route 3-D (Huchuy Picchu): Specialized hiking options available exclusively during peak season.
For adventurous explorers who wish to combine multiple Inca archaeological sites into a single high-mountain journey, the ultimate route is the Choquequirao – Machu Picchu Tour 8 days.
Practical Information, Rates, and Reservations
Official ticket sales are conducted through the official platform tuboleto.cultura.pe. The standard rate for foreign adults on regular circuits is 152 soles (~US$40), while citizens of the Andean Community (Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia) have preferential rates ranging between 64 and 112 soles.
Remember to check the entry time grace periods at the checkpoint: the system grants a 30-minute grace period during low season and a 45-minute grace period during peak season. Beyond this time, entry is not guaranteed. Plan your trip in advance and travel with the professional, bilingual support of Inca World.
