Two British researchers announced in this month's Antiquity the discovery of what appears to be an enormous labyrinth among the world-famous Nazca Lines in Peru. In the most detailed study of its kind to date, researchers spent five years walking the lines and studying superimposed designs, digital satellite mapping, and photographs of associated pottery, concluding that the Nazca used ritual labyrinths which were "meant to be walked and not seen".
It was announced today that various artifacts were discovered at Salapunku, which is located along the Inca Trail, in the "buffer zone" for Machu Picchu Sanctuary. A variety of bones, ceramics, and textiles which appear upon preliminary examination to date back to the Inca culture suggest that the area may be part of an Incan cemetery, although excavation and examination must continue in order to be certain.
It was announced last week that a museum focusing on the history of mining in Peru's central sierra will be built in the Pasco region, at 14,042 feet above sea level, which according to Peruvian news organs will make it the highest museum in the world.
Peru's struggle to protect its cultural heritage continues, with recent victories such as the increasingly popular repatriated Machu Picchu relics now housed in Cusco, Peru, to the return today of the tiny- no more than a foot tall- pre-Incan mummified toddler who was confiscated in Bolivia two years ago while traffickers attempted to ship it to France.
King Abdullah II of Jordan took time from his diplomatic visit to Peru to explore the most iconic symbol of the Inca empire, Machu Picchu Archeological Complex in Peru, having travelled from Lima through Nazca and to Cusco via motorcycle convoy. The monarch praised the storied site as "beautiful, fantastic, and wonderful."
Exciting plans were announced to renovate parts of quaint seaside Huanchaco Village and promoting the use of its caballitos de totora, reed surfcraft used for thousands of years in the area, for sport. Designated the 5thWorld Surfing Reserve for its consistently good waves, Huanchaco does already have its fans- it was described by the president of the International Surfing Association as "surfing's equivalent to the great pyramids, an ancient cradle for surf culture."
