Detailed Itinerary: Day by Day

DAY 1: Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Kayaking Adventure

Our adventure begins in the city of Puerto Maldonado. We will make a stop at the bustling local market to immerse ourselves in the Amazonian culture and enjoy a traditional lunch featuring the rich flavors of the Madre de Dios region. Afterward, we head to the port to board a motorized boat, navigating down the Madre de Dios River for about an hour to reach our eco-lodge.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a refreshing, local tropical drink. After checking into your private bungalow and settling in, we kick off the day's activities:

  • Monkey Island Expedition: A boat ride takes us to this unique sanctuary where we will spot various species in the wild, including spider monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and capuchins.

  • Kayaking & Caiman Spotting: Enjoy a scenic kayak paddle on the river, followed by an evening boat safari to search for caimans along the riverbanks as night falls.

We will return to the lodge for dinner. Afterward, you can choose to relax in your bungalow or join an optional night walk to experience the nocturnal sounds of the jungle.

Included

  • Lunch, dinner, tourist land transport, boat transfers, bilingual guide, activities, and night at the eco-lodge.

Not included

  • Extra drinks
  • Extra expenses

DAY 2: Canopy Zipline & Exploring Sandoval Lake

We start the morning with a hearty jungle breakfast before heading out for an adrenaline-pumping zipline (canopy) experience. Safely equipped with professional harnesses, you will glide 35 meters (115 feet) above the jungle floor on ziplines spanning 100 and 190 meters, offering a bird's-eye view of the rainforest canopy. We then head back to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon, we will embark on a 1.5-hour trek through primary, untouched rainforest toward the world-famous Sandoval Lake. Once at the lake:

  • We will board traditional wooden rowboats to smoothly navigate the waters.

  • We will search for the endangered Giant River Otters (lobo de río).

  • You will observe a vast array of flora and fauna, from wild orchids to prehistoric hoatzin birds, caimans, and massive paiche fish.

  • Weather and park regulations permitting, there will be an opportunity for a refreshing swim in designated areas.

At sunset, we return to the lodge for a delicious dinner and a restful night.

Included

  • Breakfast, lunch, dinner, transport, expert guiding, activities, and wooden rowboat rental.

Not included

  • Extras drinks
  • Snacks

DAY 3: Parrot Clay Lick & Return to Puerto Maldonado

Our final day starts early. We board our boats at dawn and travel upriver toward a local parrot clay lick (collpa). This is a massive clay cliff rich in mineral salts where hundreds of parrots and macaws gather every morning to feed, creating a spectacular display of color and sound.

After capturing this beautiful natural phenomenon on camera, we will enjoy a fresh breakfast. Finally, we head back to the lodge to pack our bags and catch our return boat back to the city of Puerto Maldonado, where our 3-day journey concludes.

Included

  • Breakfast, professional guiding, and boat transfers.

Not included

  • Lunch on Day 3 and extra expenses.

Tips:

To ensure you enjoy your Puerto Maldonado tour to the fullest, the Inca World Travel guide team has put together this essential checklist:

What to Pack in Your Daypack

  • The Jungle Uniform: The Amazon is hot and humid, but for trekking, long pants (2 to 3 pairs) and long-sleeve shirts (3 to 4) are mandatory. They protect you from brushing against sharp plants and, most importantly, from mosquito bites. Don't forget 4 pairs of long socks.

  • Rain Gear & Footwear: Pack sturdy walking shoes or sneakers and a waterproof rain poncho. Rainstorms in the rainforest can happen at a moment's notice.

  • Electronics: A reliable flashlight or headlamp is crucial for the night walks. Bring your camera with fully charged spare batteries, as electricity at eco-lodges can be limited to specific hours of the day.

Health & Safety

  • Skin Protection: Bring high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a heavy-duty insect repellent (DEET-based is highly recommended).

  • Stay Hydrated: Bring a reusable water bottle or canteen to help us minimize single-use plastic waste in the reserve.

  • Personal Items: Keep your personal medications handy and carry a photocopy of your passport inside a waterproof or Ziploc bag.

💡 Pro Tip: If you have any energy left at the end of Day 1, do not skip the night walk. The Amazon completely transforms after dark; it is the absolute best time to spot unique insects, tarantulas, and listen to the true "orchestra" of the wild. Also, keep your swimsuit handy—taking a dip in the Amazonian waters on a hot afternoon is a memory you won’t soon forget!
